Despite only being half way through February, this year has seen a lot of changes already, not least in the recent facelift to the brand of RAW Photographic. Well, we're happy to say there's now a new product hitting the shelves in the form of our first Photography Workshop!
For photography enthusiasts and wildlife lovers alike, there’s no greater thrill than capturing the raw beauty of nature — especially when that nature is as magnificent as the African wilderness. This new workshop, Framing Africa, is designed to help both beginners and enthusiasts learn their cameras and the specifics of wildlife photography, while immersed in some of the world’s most stunning wildlife.
Like most of our Photographic Safari offerings, this workshop takes place in South Africa and offers to provide a truly memorable, comfortable and exciting experience. Where this workshop differs, however, is in the tuition...

Focuses
Firstly, each day is disctinctly different as each game drive will take on a photographic focus, whether technical or creative, and time back at the lodge will be allocated to specific seminars and exercises for an ongoing learning experience. Many aspiring photographers struggle with the technical aspects of their camera, often feeling overwhelmed by the settings, buttons, and features that can make or break a perfect shot - and what to do with their shots afterwards when sat at their laptop - it can easily become an overwhelming and frustrating experience. This workshop takes a refreshing approach by allowing participants to learn in real-time, supported every step of the way to make sure that the process is not just always a positive one, but an enjoyable one too.
This will start from camera basics, the exposure triangle, working with challenging light, tracking subjects, creative storytelling as well as the importance of image cataloging and post-processing in Adobe Lightroom. There will also be topics that cover the importance of knowing animal behaviour, ethical guidelines and conservation education.

Dual Guidance
Last, but certainly not least, this is a collaborative venture between RAW Photographic and nature & conservation photographer Jordi Woerts. For those that don't know Jordi, he was one of Sam's first volunteer / students many years ago whose passion and determination led him to working full time as a field guide in various reserves in South Africa. For years Jordi got unprecended experience in guiding guests, opening their eyes and minds to the wonders of Africa's wilderness - and all the while keeping his camera handy! Sam and Jordi come together again now, wanting to combine their expertise into a product that can not only be thoroughly enjoyed - but also educate and develop others in a more hard hitting and impactful way.
Having two hosts on this workshop brings a wealth of benefits, offering participants diverse perspectives, varied teaching styles and personalised attention. With two guiding the group, attendees can receive tailored advice based on their individual skill levels and interests. The dual approach also allows for more hands-on support in the field, as one photographer can focus on technical aspects and creative composition whilst the other works on animal behaviour and can highlight conservation needs and impacts - ensuring a well-rounded and enriched learning experience. Plus, it fosters a collaborative atmosphere, encouraging participants to learn from both instructors and each other.
Luxury In The Wild
For 2025 and 2026 this workshop takes place in the heart of the Madikwe Game Reserve in South Africa, where participants will have 24 / 7 access to extraordinary photographic opportunities. With a mix of early-morning and late-afternoon game drives, as well as a photographic hide overlooking a popular waterhole, photographers will be able to witness and capture animals at their most active, while receiving real-time coaching on how to adjust their cameras for optimal shots.
In addition to the photography tuition, the workshop is designed to be a full-on adventure. Participants will stay in a comfortable, family-style lodge, enjoy gourmet meals prepared with local ingredients, and be able unwind with fellow photographers around the bar in the evenings.

Framing Africa offers an exciting, unique and collaborative way to learn photography while creating lasting memories. Whether you’re looking to take your first professional-quality photograph or want to refine your skills in one of the world’s most photogenic locations, this workshop is an unparalleled opportunity!
